Inhabiting The Body You Love And Loving The Body You Inhabit with Dr. Mary Attwood
Maybe the word “fat” is a hard word to hear or use. Maybe it’s a bad word to you. First we have to reclaim the word as just another word. Tall, short, wide, thin, fat, skinny: these are all just adjectives. But only one has a huge stigma, and first we have to work on undoing that inner fat phobia before we can address weight stigma at large. Nowhere is fat phobia more upsetting than in healthcare or coming from your doctor. Maybe your goal isn’t to lose weight, but many doctors have told you it’s the answer to your healthcare complaint without offering other important treatment options. Maybe your goal is to lose weight, but restrictive diets proved unsuccessful and you’ve done them all. Using the Health At Every Size® Principles of weight inclusivity, health enhancement, and respectful care, we can better advocate for the health and wellness fat bodies deserve.

In this webinar we’ll explore the importance of weight inclusivity in the healthcare setting as well as debunk the myth of BMI importance. Together we’ll come up with salient tools for first clearing internal weight bias or shame, and explore life-enhancing movement & eating for well-being, two tools offered by the HAES® approach. Whether or not you inhabit a bigger body, this class can help you hold better space for the fat folks in your life. And if you are a health care provider, we’ll offer some tips to make your treatment space more inclusive.

Dr. Mary Attwood (she/her) is a naturopathic doctor with a doctorate in Naturopathic Medicine from National University of Natural Medicine. She inhabits a bigger body herself and knows the importance of first understanding internal weight bias in order to advocate for those experiencing societal weight stigma. Her favorite areas of medicine are mental health, physical medicine and bodywork, and helping those in marginalized or intersectional communities access the care they need, especially those in fat or bigger bodies.
